China Glaze On Your Knees!

Is it just me, or were polish names a little more risqué in the past? I seem to keep running across a lot of older polishes with very interesting names, and today I have another oldie but goodie. China Glaze On Your Knees! was part of the 2002 Winter collection called Crown Jewels. Lately I have been on a total old polish buying binge–the older they are, the more excited I get. You can blame all the dusties in my area for my recent obsession with older polishes.

Behold the Fall beauty of China Glaze On Your Knees!

China Glaze On Your Knees! Swatch          China Glaze On Your Knees! Swatch

This polish has a glowing cinnamon aspect to it so it reminds me a little bit of Jessica’s Cinnamon Kiss. This polish is definitely not 3-free and I found the formula dreamy: it is a little sheer but it’s super easy to control and apply. These are the type of colors that I look forward to wearing every fall and winter.

And because I’ve missed my stamping…

China Glaze On Your Knees! Essie As Good As Gold Mash 41          China Glaze On Your Knees! Essie As Good As Gold Mash 41

I really don’t like the Essie Mirror Metallics as regular polish, but I love them for stamping. Look how gorgeously crisp the stamping is with As Good As Gold! I used a design from Mash plate 41 for this design in case you were wondering. Doesn’t it remind you of a chain link fence?

I might have asked this before, but does it annoy you when I feature polishes that are discontinued and are probably hard to find? I have found so many amazing polishes (some even pre-2000) lately so I’m super excited to share them on here. Let me know what you think about this and about my latest mani. I love hearing all your opinions. Thanks again for stopping by–your feedback keeps this blog fun for me. 🙂

Deal Alert: Free Nails Inc. Nail Polish

EDIT: There seems to be some conflicting information as to whether this is legit or not. I can say that I do tend to get tons of freebies so I am a bit of a risk taker. I would not, however, click on any links they might send me or something of that nature. I hope this is a legit freebie. Please use your own discretion when filling things out online.

Hi Ladies! I just submitted my request for a free bottle of Nails Inc. nail polish thanks to another master enabler who let me in on the deal. It looks like they still have polish available so head on over to Amazing Beauty and fill out their form. Hey, it’s free so it’s worth a shot, right? They have  6 different colors to choose from

I hope this is legit and we all get our free polish! 🙂

Nicole By OPI Fall 2012 (Target Exclusives)

Sometimes I can be a total weirdo and focus on insignificant details. Take the brand Nicole By OPI, for example: I have a handful of these polishes and generally like the formula and the brushes, but I really hate the awkward bottle shape.  For whatever reason, I have fixated on my distaste for the bottle shape and don’t usually purchase a lot of these polishes. I also kind of can’t stand the Kardashian Empire so when I see the NOPI Kardashian Kollection, I want to hurl. Anyway, enough about my weird fixations…this is about the polish!! There are 5 Target Exclusives from the Nicole By OPI Fall 2012 collection, and I have 2 of those to share with you today.

The first one up is Just Busta Mauve.

Nicole By OPI Fall 2012 Just Busta Mauve Swatch          Nicole By OPI Fall 2012 Just Busta Mauve Swatch

I really thought that this was a strange color when I looked at the bottle. I had absolutely no idea what it would look like on my nails with all those weird colors floating around, but it really surprised me. In fact, I love it.  If I had to complain about something, it would have to be that the formula is a little thin but it does build up without any problems. From the look of the polish, I was expecting it to be kind of gritty but it was perfectly smooth. As an aside, the name of this polish brought back fond memories of me playing Bust-A-Move on the Neo-Geo arcades when my mom would go shopping with us. She would give my brother and I a bunch of quarters and we would run to the back of this store we use to go to and we’d play Bust-A-Move and Super Mario Bros. 3 on another machine until our hands cramped or our eyes bled–or both. Ahh…to be a kid again.

The second color is If The Blue Fits.

Nicole By OPI Fall 2012 If The Blue Fits Swatch          Nicole By OPI Fall 2012 If The Blue Fits Swatch

Since I’ve been on a blue kick lately, I really like this polish because it’s not a boring color: it has just the right amount of kick to attract attention. The formula on this was better than on Just Busta Mauve as it was a little thicker so you can get away with less coats. I love all the different colors in this polish!

Overall, I think both of these polishes are total wins! If I had to pick just one, I would probably go with Just Busta Mauve. These polishes have been out at Target stores and online since August so you should still be able to pick them up if you like either of these. They retail for around $7.00 unless you wait and catch them on sale.  So what do you think of these two colors? Which one would you get if you could only have one–what a true Sophie’s choice! (Not! You know you’d get both.)

Thanks for catching up with me and talk to you soon!

31 Inspired Days of Nail Art – Day 11 : Half Moon Nails

A few days ago I broke two nails while I was cleaning and washing dishes. I got so irritated that I cut my nails off. I went chop crazy and cut my nails super short again…yes, painfully short. I know I said I wouldn’t do that again, but I couldn’t help myself. I had initially decided to use fake nails for this manicure and just polish them myself. However, they just looked so odd to me that I ended up prying them off and doing my own tiny little nails. I started out with 2 coats of essence Black is Black.

essence Black Is Black Swatch          essence Black Is Black Swatch

This really is my favorite black because it’s dark, shiny and super opaque. It reminds me of my favorite patent leather mary janes.

essence Black Is Black and Butter London Wallis Half Moon          essence Black Is Black and Butter London Wallis Half Moon

I then used Butter London Wallis for the half moons. I seriously never thought I would like this color as much as I do. I picked it up during the Coterie sale where I got 3 Butter London polishes plus a top coat for only $11!!! Talk about a great deal.

essence Black Is Black and Butter London Wallis Half Moon Matte with Stars          essence Black Is Black and Butter London Wallis Half Moon Matte with Stars

And lastly I applied some gold glitter stars before the final touch: a matte top coat. I had seen someone mattify Wallis and I was instantly in love so I had to try it myself.

I am satisfied with these nails despite how tiny my nails are. I can’t wait for them to grow a little so I can square them again. What do you think of this manicure? Don’t forget to check out the other manicures created by my fellow challenge participants. Thanks for stopping by and talk to you soon.

P.S. Sorry I’m a little rushed but I’m hangry (hungry + angry) and my brother is rushing me since we are going to my favorite mexi-food place. Ahhhh…tacos, carne asada, 7 mares, ceviche…I’m drooling.

Smile

Any other Lily Allen fans out there?

I love this song. In fact, it’s my favorite song to sing when I’m playing Karaoke Revolution or when I go karaoking with my friends (hey Nancy!) The reason why I started with this song is because the title of the song is Smile and that is a loaded word for me. Let me explain to you why…

I’ve had parts of this post in my drafts since June and I kept wanting to post it but then would hesitate and just banish it to the limbo of wordpress drafts. First I have to say that this is a very difficult topic for me to talk about because it’s such a huge source of insecurity for me. Someone asked me if I consider myself “handicapped” and I said no, of course. I guess you could consider depression a disability because it certainly does incapacitate you, but I am thinking more along the lines of an actual physical disability. I am able-bodied; I can run (if I try real hard lol); I can do anything…except smile. I bet that sounds weird, but let me explain a bit. About 10 years ago, I came down with a case of Bell’s Palsy. I had never heard of Bell’s Palsy before my doctor talked to me about it. At that point, I was working 2 jobs and going to school full-time so I was basically working myself ragged. One day I woke up and couldn’t move the right side of my face. I remember getting up and going to the bathroom to wash my face and taking my face wash and lathering it up before massaging it onto my face. OUCH!!! Why is there soap in my eye?! Why is there even more soap in my eye now?? I rinsed off my face and I knew water and soap were all over my eye. What the hell is going on?? I looked up and saw that half my face was sagging. I looked like one of Salvador Dalí’s melting clocks.

I wasn’t as concerned about it as you might think because beside the sting of the soap in my eye, I felt fine. Of course my mom ran around the house screaming that I had a stroke so we headed over to the ER. The doctors assured me that it was not a stroke and that it was actually Bell’s Palsy.

Bell’s palsy causes sudden weakness in your facial muscles. This makes half of your face appear to droop. Your smile is one-sided, and your eye on that side resists closing.

Bell’s palsy, also known as facial palsy, can occur at any age. The exact cause is unknown, but it’s believed to be the result of swelling and inflammation of the nerve that controls the muscles on one side of your face. It may be a reaction that occurs after a viral infection.

For most people, Bell’s palsy is temporary. Symptoms usually start to improve within a few weeks, with complete recovery in about six months. A small number of people continue to have some Bell’s palsy symptoms for life. Rarely, Bell’s palsy can recur.

They gave me some information, a prescription for prednisone and an anti-viral and sent me on my way assuring me that Bell’s Palsy was not life-threatening and that most people recover after a few weeks. By that point, I was unable to close my eye so I had tape it shut at night and had to wear an eye path during the day since I couldn’t blink. I had no control over the right side of my face including my mouth. Imagine drinking something and the liquid dribbling out through the right side of your mouth. Yeah…comical. As the weeks passed, I started seeing small improvements which reassured me that things would continue to improve until I recovered. However, that was not to be the case. 10 years later, I am still dealing with the physical remnants of my bout with Bell’s Palsy. Physically, I am able to blink, close my eye but I still have residual weakness  on my eyelid and on my mouth which means that when I try to smile, my eye and mouth don’t fully cooperate. One of the more annoying things is that when the inflamed nerve regenerated, some cross-wiring happened and I now have something called “crocodile tears” which means that my affected eye tears up when I am meant to salivate. So basically my eye will tear up whenever I eat. How annoying do you imagine that being? These are just some of the physical effects which are nothing compared to the psychological effects.

What does a smile mean to you? To me it means friendship, like, acceptance. Imagine not being able to fully convey those feelings. Part of me feels that this is just a question of vanity and that I should be grateful that I don’t have a “true” disability, but it doesn’t feel that way. I miss my old smile. I miss my old face! It always makes me so self-conscious when I meet new people and I find myself always looking down….looking away. I try so hard not to let people close to me know how much this bothers me so I almost never talk about it because I don’t want to bring more attention to it. Whenever I am already feeling down, this is a big source of what pushes me to feel even worse about myself. I think we are always very critical of ourselves–more than other people would ever be–so I always imagine the worst of myself and how others see me. I had a co-worker who came down with a case of Bell’s Palsy so she came to me to ask questions. We talked about it and she was relieved when, a few weeks later, she had recovered 100%. She then said to me: “Oh my God, I would have killed myself if I hadn’t recovered!” Gee, thanks. Sometimes I wonder why people don’t think before they open their mouths.

I don’t know why I decided to write about this today. I guess that on the heels of writing about Depression Awareness Month, I wanted to just have a little episode of verbal diarrhea to just get it all off my chest. If you’re still with me, thank you for reading all the way through.  Sorry to disappoint: no Bell’s Palsy Awareness Nails. 🙂  Hey, at least I can laugh about it…even if somewhat lopsided.

31 Inspired Days of Nail Art – Day 10 : Gradient Nails

Gradient Nails: you are my mortal enemy. It doesn’t matter how many tutorials I watch or how many tips people give me, I just can’t get this technique down. I’ve used a bout a million different type of sponges, and I’ve never been able to achieve the beautiful results I’ve seen on other blogs. I was fearing this challenge day because I hadn’t attempted a gradient mani in a long time so I wasn’t looking forward to yet another nail fail.

I started out with two coats of Serenity.

Illamasqua Serenity Swatch          Illamasqua Serenity Swatch

I love Serenity! This polish is one of their new Rubber Brights so it dries to a satin/rubber finish.

And here is my gradient……………………………..

Illamasqua Serenity & Muse Gradient          Illamasqua Serenity & Muse Gradient

I don’t hate this, but I don’t like it either. I don’t know what happened when I tried to photograph this, but my camera took a million dumps on me and did not want to photograph Muse. What the heck,  Sony Cyber-Shot?! These were the best pictures of maybe 50…yes, 50! So anyway, I used Muse on my gradient tip which doesn’t really look like a gradient but whatever. At least I tried, and if you think it’s ugly, tweet me a picture of your gradient so I can mock it too. 😛 The next challenge revolves around half-moons which is pretty hard to mess up so at least I won’t worry about it.

Anywho, don’t forget to check out all of the other submissions for gradient nails below. Let us know what you think.

Sation Little Horse On The Prairie Collection

I thought that today was going to be a big bust for me because I went looking for the Color Club Halo Hues, but none of my nail places had them yet and they had no idea what I was talking about. There is one place that has a pretty extensive collection of Color Club but they were not open when I stopped by. This place basically has no set business hours which can be pretty frustrating, but I keep going back because they have so much amazing stuff. Anyway, when I saw they were closed I went down the street to another place, and I just ran across a fully stocked display of Miss Professional Nail polishes…including Sation Little Horse On The Prairie Collection and some of their new specialty glitters.

Little Horse On The Prairie came out about a month and a half ago but I hadn’t looked for them yet so I’m glad I found them today. The collection includes 6 colors:

Sation Little Horse On The Prairie Collection Fall 2012 Promo Image

Since I have been trying to be a little more discriminating with my polish purchases (yeah, right!), I only purchased half of this collection which is what I have to show you below:

Little Horse On The Prairie Blue Sky's The Limit Swatch          Little Horse On The Prairie Blue Sky's The Limit Swatch

Blue Sky’s The Limit really is a dreamy sky blue. I don’t really think this is a very Fall-inspired color but I am not complaining because I can never have enough gorgeous blues. The formula on this was good. I usually find that the Sation formula tends to be a little thick but this was not. It was easy to control and dry time was very fast.

Little Horse On The Prairie Weed Out The Wimps Swatch          Little Horse On The Prairie Weed Out The Wimps Swatch

Weed Out The Wimps is a soft and dusty green. I don’t think I have any similar greens so I am super happy to add this to my collection.

Little Horse On The Prairie Rock-a-Guy Blue Swatch          Little Horse On The Prairie Rock-a-Guy Blue Swatch

Rock-a-Guy Blue is my favorite color even though I think I have plenty of dupes. I am thinking this is pretty similar to Sephora by OPI Blue Grotto…perhaps just a tiny bit darker. The formula on this was perfection: fairly opaque, buttery and shiny.

Overall, I love these polishes and might be picking up the other three just because these were so great. When I have posted about Sation polishes before, people have always asked me about where to purchase them locally. I usually directed people to the Miss website or transdesign, but now I hear that they will be carried at select TJ Maxx and Marshalls! I haven’t seen them there yet but I’m sure they will start popping up soon. Oh, and I’m sorry about the super shiny/greasy fingers! I was in serious need of cuticle oil, and I went a little overboard with my Solar Oil. Woops!

So what do you think of the Little Horse On The Prairie Collection? Have you purchased any of these polishes or will you? Thanks for the visit!

Pixi Nail Polish Collection Fall 2012

It’s no secret that I love Target. I have problems staying away from Target because I go there often to buy essentials like dish detergent, laundry supplies and some bath products, but I always end up getting pulled into the beauty section. I don’t know about you, but I think that in the last few years, Target has made huge improvements in their beauty department from offering tons of different brands AND making everything very appealing to the eye. When I first ran across the Pixi cosmetics display, my eyes obviously zeroed in on the nail polishes. At first, I thought they were nail art polishes because they look so much like them with the long bottle shape. Upon closer inspection, I realized they were regular nail polishes, but I hesitated getting some because I had never heard of the brand before. In my usual enabling ways, today I have the Pixi Nail Polish Collection for Fall 2012 to share with you.

Their Fall collection consists of three jewel-toned shades: Amazing Amethyst, Classy Cocoa and Evening Emerald.

Amazing Amethyst Pixi Nail Polish Collection Fall 2012 Swatch          Amazing Amethyst Pixi Nail Polish Collection Fall 2012 Swatch

Amazing Amethyst is a color that I am super attracted to because, well…it’s PURPLE! Besides it being purple, it’s just glowing like a mofo. Unfortunately, I don’t think this color is super unique. I haven’t done a side by side comparison, but this reminds me of OPI Purple With a Purpose. The formula was good and opaque at two coats.

Classy Cocoa Pixi Nail Polish Collection Fall 2012 Swatch          Classy Cocoa Pixi Nail Polish Collection Fall 2012 Swatch

Classy Cocoa looked kind of yawn-worthy when I first looked at the bottle, but I was glad to be wrong. I love the glow of this polish, and I was surprised to not have anything similar to this color.  The formula on this was ok. It seemed a little thin, but it builds up nicely.

Evening Emerald Pixi Nail Polish Collection Fall 2012 Swatch          Evening Emerald Pixi Nail Polish Collection Fall 2012 Swatch

Evening Emerald is the star here. I am super annoyed that this color is photographing so much more blue than it actually is in real life so please imagine this being a lot more green. The shimmer in this polish is out of this world, and I definitely appreciate a dark color like this now that the temperatures are finally coming down. I want to pull out some polishes to compare. The first color that came to mind is China Glaze Emerald Fitzgerald but I am sure it’s a lot more green. The formula on this was also a tad thin, but I had no problems building it up. I had to apply 3 thin coats for these swatches.

Overall, I am happy with my first experience with Pixi polishes. I think the formula was nice and the colors are pretty, but here comes the “but.” I am not a fan of the price. These polishes are $8 for .25 oz. which makes them way more expensive than polishes such as Essie and OPI and even my holy grail higher end polishes by Illamasqua. Would I purchase regular and common colors from the Pixi line of polishes? Probably not, but I would definitely buy a color like Evening Emerald. I am really curious to know what a creme polish from this line is like so I’ll be paying close attention to the Pixi display the next time I am at Target. Pixi nail polishes can be purchase from Target and target.com or you can also order from pixibeauty.com

Let me know if you’ve tried these polishes out before. I’m curious to hear what you think of them if you’ve tried them. What do you think of their fall trio collection? Which color is your favorite?

As always, thanks for stopping by and catching up with me.

31 Inspired Days of Nail Art – Day 7 : Rainbow Nails

I’m back today since my break from the last few challenge posts. I couldn’t really come up with anything too creative so I did this simple look. It looks a little sloppy but I think it came out ok considering I rushed through it. I ended up using all Wet N Wild polishes for this rainbow design.

The polishcolors I used are: Red Red, Straight A Jesse, Pin ‘Em Slater, Nerd Alert Screech, Bijou Blue, On A Trip and Eggplant Frost.

I used French White Creme as my base:

Wet N Wild French White Creme Swatch     Wet N Wild French White Creme Swatch

This white actually surprised me because it wasn’t super streaky and it was opaque with two coats.

I then used some circle stickers as a guide to help with the first row of dots. I’m sure that most people wouldn’t need a guide for a simple arc but I am challenged in anything having to do with nail art…if you can call this nail art.

I want to thank all the lovely ladies who stop by my blog to read and comment. I haven’t been following up on comments and emails much because we’ve had some devastating losses in my family lately so I haven’t been much in the mood to do any kind of nail stuff. I am trying to get back into things so I can have some sort of distraction so thank you for all the kind words of those who have been so supportive lately. Love you all!

Make sure that you check out everyone’s submissions below and let us know what you think.
