Stamping Sunday: Red & Black

A few weeks ago, Jessica from Once Upon A Polish blogged about a facebook group called Adventures In Stamping where everyone votes for a particular look or color scheme and then all the ladies post their manis every Sunday. Well, I thought it sounded really fun so I joined! I really didn’t know what to do so I started looking through my melmers and realized I hadn’t used Layla Flash Black.

Call me crazy, but I actually don’t really like Flash Black on me.  It just looks so weird on me, and I’m really disappointed…not to mention that Layla holos chip in 5 seconds on me.

I then stamped over Flash Black with Konad special polish in red and plate BM 322. I then used a dotting tool to add the black dots with China Glaze Liquid Leather. One word: barf. I hate how this turned out but not all manis are going to be winners, and you have to embrace the good with the bad. I have no idea why I thought that stamping over Flash Black would be a good idea. It just looks dingy and grey…not interesting at all. I’m annoyed that I spent so much time on this mani and ended up not even liking it; hey, at least now I know Flash Black isn’t what I thought it would be.

So I think my first Stamping Sunday Challenge is a big fat fail. Hopefully I will do better next week. Voting has already started and our three choices are:

  • Fun In The Sun
  • Olympics
  • Using silver, gold or bronze as a base, accent or stamping color

I voted for using silver, gold or bronze as a base, accent or stamping color. So far this choice is in the lead, and I hope it stays that way! Check out the look Jessica created here. I am in love with it!

Thanks for stopping by!

Yay, you joined! I don't think this looks that bad but I know what it feels like to just hate the look or be disappointed with an outcome. Especially when you spend so long working on it. Thats how I feel about this week's Teal Tuesday design, and i found out i dont have that much patience. Sometimes it just doesn't look like we imagined it to! It's weird that your bottle of Flash Black looks so washed out and dingy, mine looked much darker.

It's fun! Omg…some of the manis on there are crazy good. I am so over the layla holos because they are so expensive and they just don't last on me at all. They seriously chip in a couple of hours. :( I wonder what the Color Club holos will be like. Grrr…I'm still so disappointed with the look of this. I hate it when things just don't come out the way I imagined them. I am going to have to practice my gradient technique after seeing yours. I loved it!

They are way overpriced. I bought one with an Ulta coupon otherwise, waaay out of my normal price range without megatons of rationalizing. I won Flash Black, which made it an automatic winner in my book. I haven't had any hopping problems from these but I use an aqua base and top coat. I also wear gloves for everything! lol I kind of sorta want the new green/emerald colored Layla but I have Nubar Reclaim on the way so that might quench that lemming.

Have you heard of the Monkey See Monkey Do fb group? Its basically a copycat nail art group where you attribute your inspiration in the post. It posts on Monday and I'm thinking of joining but worry that I won't have enough time.

Hmmm…that sounds interesting. I think I have the time right now but I think I can only handle one of these at a time. lol I am so spastic that it will stress me out if I know I HAVE to do certain things on certain days. Now I really sound psycho. hahaha.

I guess those layla holos just don't like my nails. It's such a shame because the holo is crazy good on them. I really want that red holo that they just added to their line but I think I'm going to stay away. At those prices, I'd rather get some Illamasquas. :)

Call me crazy, but I really like this and I like the color combo! I'm a stamping newb and need to invest in konad stamping polishes! Excited to see what you come up with next weekend :)

Thanks Nicole! I think I would have liked it better if I had used a different base color. I just didn't like how Flash Black looked underneath. Hopefully I'll come up with something better next week.

I like this with the bit of holo sticking out from behind the stamp!

    1. 29 July, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Thank you! I should have used a stamp that let the holo polish show more…that probably would have made me like it more.

  4. 29 July, 2012 at 1:53 pm

I like this. The color combo isn't something you see every day. This is why i love you work so much. Can't wait to see next weeks combo!
    Happy Painting!

Thanks so much! :) I am looking forward to next week too. Since I wasn't really too happy with this one, maybe next week I can do a redemption mani.

That sucks that your nails hate your Layla's so much. :( I agree tho- this polish doesn't seem to do much for you. Idk how to explain it but it makes your fingers look weird. Not like I hate it, but just… idk… I just agree with you. And the stamping is fine but I see what you're taking about. It killed the holoness and also I think the red just looks meh. Sorry it didn't turn out. I stamped some little bows onto flash black last week (post coming soon) and I've decided that stamping is a waste of time over holos. It never seems to look that great to me. It either covers up too much of the polish (like here) or just looks flat and dead on the holo background (that's how mine looked). Mayyybe the CC holos will behave themselves on your nails! :D

    1. 30 July, 2012 at 6:29 am

I know!!! Damn it…this one really hurts because it was so expensive. I do like the other colors and I like the red one that they just added to their line. It looks gorgeous but I just don't want to pay so much again for a polish that is going to chip to high hell on me.

I hope the CC holos work on me. The OPI linear holos are amazing…I love both of the colors I found. They are so glossy and don't chip at all.

You don't like Flashback? GIVE IT TO ME, THEN!!! It's my birthday on Sunday…I expect a package ;P
I don't think this is bad at all. I can see where your grievances come from, but…overall, looking at it, I thought it was pretty cool.

    1. 30 July, 2012 at 6:47 am

Awww…thanks. I really hate it the more I look at it. lol I'll get over it. I think these holos are going to be used more for nail art stuff. If the CC holos turn out crappy, I am going to be so over holos…until the CG holos come out, that is. :)

I'm SO excited for the new CG holos to come out!
If the CC holos don't work out save your money for the CG holos lol :o)

        1. 30 July, 2012 at 11:21 am

Since I'm such a crazy hoarder, I know I'm going to buy all the CC holos no matter what. I just hope I can get them for cheap. I can't wait for the CG holos since I have so much holo envy because I missed the OMG collection altogether.
