Essie Oldies

As a fairly recent nail polish addict, it pains me to realize how many amazing collections I have missed out on pre-2011 because I wasn’t really following any of the major brands. I was an occasional nail polish wearer until I started getting weekly salon manicures. It was something that I would do every Friday after work to help me de-stress and just put work out of my mind for the weekend. So when I think of all those amazing–and sadly discontinued–collections that I missed out on, I just want to cry! (I’m looking at you China Glaze OMG!)

I am always on the lookout for older polishes so I tend to spend a lot of time searching online for information. I especially like to collect REALLY old nail polishes mostly for the vintage bottles, but that’s a whole other obsession that I won’t discuss right now. There are a lot of polish etailers out there but today I’m going to talk to you about Beauty Stop Online. They have a wide range of products (not just polishes!) so you should definitely check them out if you’re looking for quality products at a good price.

Today I have two Essie polishes that pre-date my polish hoarding days: Poor Lil’ Rich Girl & Looking For Love.

Poor Lil’ Rich Girl is from the Winter 2004 Frozen Assets Collection. You are probably thinking that there are tons of dark red nail polishes out there and you are right: there are! While this color is not terribly unique, I can never turn down a glossy and vibrant creme polish. Application was not a problem even though I needed 3 coats to even out the color. This is not a straightforward red; I think that it has some brown in it that gives it a vampy feel. This is the type of color that I love to wear when my nails are this short. And before I forget, I can’t stop singing “Rich Girl” by H&O every time I look at this polish!

This polish thoroughly confused me. From the Spring 2008 In The Mood Collection, Looking For Love is not a polish I would normally wear, but I think that I have been trying to branch out. Essie is known for their delicate sheers and pastels so I decided to give this one a try. In the bottle, this color appeared to be gray with some blue but once I got it on my nails, I saw a slight lavender/lilac tinge to it. Upon googling this polish, I came across a lot of information from other polish fiends stating that there appeared to be two versions of this polish (My Private Jet anyone?!) While I like the end result, this polish was kind of a streaky nightmare. It took 4 coats to get this manicure done.

When did your polish obsession start?

  1. I feel the same way! I started "collecting" in late 2010 and I feel like I missed out on so many. I have a thing for older disco'd polishes as well and look out for them all of the time!

    1. I have such a wealth of polish places that carry super old polishes that I go nuts sometimes. I have gotten polishes that are over 10 years old…love the old CG bottles and Color Club. It's just so cool to see the evolution. 🙂

    1. I’m not that far behind you. I wish I had gotten into this sooner but I can’t even imagine how big my collection would be by now. I mean, in one year I am in the 700′s when it comes to bottles of polish so can you imagine what it would be like if I had started sooner? lol Yikes! You have some great designs on your blog! Thanks for stopping by mine and commenting! 🙂

  4. I've always been bad about biting my nails, so after chipping my teeth for the umpteenth time about ten years ago, I started painting my nails to deter me. About a year into it, I got bored of the same old polishes I would alternate between, and starting using fun polishes. Now I'm always getting new colors whenever I go to the store.

    1. I totally understand that. I never really bit my nails, but I would bite my cuticles until my fingers were bloody. That was beyond disgusting but I couldn't stop. I had to get acrylic nails in order to prevent me from biting and it eventually worked. I haven't done that in over 10 years! I've acquired so many polishes in the last year that I don't even know what to wear anymore.

    1. I have a lot of OPI too. They have my favorite brush from any brand that I have tried so far. Lately, I haven't seen anything interesting coming from OPI. The Germany Collection was a big yawn-fest for me so I ended up only getting one color. I want to see their holiday collection in person because it looks interesting. What do you think of the Mariah Carey collaboration?

  9. Yay, I'm so glad you were able to repost this. I was looking forward to reading it 🙂

I went so too many years not paying attention to the polish world so I know exactly what you mean when you say you hate to think of all the polishes you've missed out on. I hear ya with China Glaze, boo! 🙁

I love how Looking for Love came out, it looks really pretty!

I do still have some of my polishes from my teenage years (think the mid to late 90s!) I was really obsessed with polish when I was about 14 or 15 but then sometime around 2000 I just stopped caring. So up until about 5 months ago I really didn't care about polish much. Yikes I'm not thinking about all of those polishes I've missed out on.

    1. I can't believe I'm still awake just spazing out about all this blog stuff. I do think I am on my way to figuring out all the issues so I can rest easier.

You know, I really like how Looking For Love looks too, but it's just such an application turd that I don't know if I'd have the patience to try it again. Because of how sheer it is, I'm thinking it could be a good polish for a jelly sandwich. I guess there is only one way to find out! 🙂

Ok, I really would love to see your polishes from the 90's! I got so excited just thinking about it. When I was a teen, I never wore polish because there was no such thing as Seche Vite as far as I knew. I remember those drops and sprays that supposedly helped your polish dry quickly but they never worked for me, and I was too impatient to wait for anything to dry. I wish my mom had been a polish addict because I would be raiding all her polishes right this second. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

  10. I feel the same way. I had some polishes that dated back to when my mom went to nail school and of course I bought the occassional nail color. but back then I chewed my nubs and my cuticles so I never had polish on for very long, and then once I realised I didn't chew… the obsession began. There are also a lot that I missed out on that I am not happy with.. 🙁 I get why you love this red, although its not special and s a lot like other reds, its not. gorgeous!

    1. I think that nail/cuticle biting is one of the grossest habits around. I am so glad we were able to stop. My fingers were always so messed up back then. I think that I first started getting super obsessed with make up and I have enough to last me a lifetime now. I guess polish was the next logical step. hehe

    1. Thanks! They are interesting for sure. I think I like them more just because they are from older collections. If Looking For Love wasn't such an application nightmare, I'd like it a lot more.

  11. We are kind of similar again! I have liked nail polish since back in middle school, so I've always had a fair-sized collection. The real OBSESSING, however, probably started a couple of years ago. I also used to get manis each week (my favorite place was right across from my apt. and open on Sundays), but then I started doing them myself again to save $ and actually prefer it.

This kind of vampy red is always a win in my book. This kind of sheer…lilac?…is always a nightmare in my book. ;P

    1. I think that the only sheer lilac that I really love is Essie Lilacism. It applies well and looks good on me. I know some people think it’s an application nightmare, but I guess I got lucky! Since I am back to only liking short nails on myself, I always tend to gravitate towards dark colors.

You must have some crazy old polishes in your stash…jealous!
