September is PCOS Awareness Month

As I was catching up on twitter this morning, I cam across a few posts from a few ladies talking about September being PCOS Awareness Month–I had no idea! I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2007 and have been dealing with all the problems that accompany it. For those of you who may not be aware of what PCOS is, here is an overview from the Mayo Clinic:

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. The name of the condition comes from the appearance of the ovaries in most, but not all, women with the disorder — enlarged and containing numerous small cysts located along the outer edge of each ovary (polycystic appearance).

Infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne and obesity can all occur in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. In adolescents, infrequent or absent menstruation may signal the condition. In women past adolescence, difficulty becoming pregnant or unexplained weight gain may be the first sign.

The exact cause of polycystic ovary syndrome is unknown. Early diagnosis and treatment may reduce the risk of long-term complications, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Being diagnosed was a whole process since one of my doctors scared me into thinking I possibly had endometrial cancer after seeing my ultrasound results. Needless to say, that was a stressful time. Dealing with PCOS is a kind of a roller coaster ride because it’s manageable but sometimes completely throws your body into the gutter. I was surprised to find out that not many people know about PCOS even though it is a common disorder. I try to look at the bright side: since it is hormonal, at least I have an excuse when I am a raging hormonal bitch…right? RIGHT?!

I started out with Zoya Charla:

This is three coats of Charla. This is the first time I wear this polish and it’s goygeous.

I used plate BM 321 for the design and I frankened my own stamping polish with a mix of some stamping polishes and some regular polishes. It turned out pretty good! I like that the ribbons aren’t super noticeable but you can really see them up close.

Look what happened to my bottle of Charla:

I am lucky that it didn’t completely shatter, but now I’m worried that maybe it will break at some random time because the glass is so thin on the side. Poor Charla! 🙁 I can’t believe that it’s still ok despite me dropping it down the stairs.

So besides the disgusting heat, I hope you enjoy your weekend. Till next time!

  1. Maybe you could pour Charla ino an empty top coat or base coat bottle…That's what I do when I need a new bottle. I also wanted to mention, you could add the InLinkz code to your post…if you want I have it, just let me know 😀

    1. Well, I don't think I'm familiar with the InLinkz thing but I figure it probably links other people who have done a PCOS awareness mani? That would be cool!

  2. I had no idea there was an actual PCOS Awareness month. Thanks for sharing! Btw, my first instinct after seeing your huge gash in Charla was to put some band-aids on it…at least it'll keep it cushioned from any accidental contact that'll fully shatter its fragile state now.

    1. That's a great idea! I am going to do this right now. lol

I didn't know there was a PCOS awareness month either but should have! There are only 12 months and like about a billion causes so I'm sure this is just one of the many conditions/diseases associated with September.

    1. I know! I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t used it yet. I’m sad that the first day I decided to use it, I ruin the bottle. I’m so clumsy sometimes.

  9. Sometimes it seems silly to do awareness nails cuz you think how does this REALLY help anything? But this is a prime example- I didn't even know what PCOS was till I saw all of these nails in the last few days. I'm sorry to hear you've been dealing w this because it sounds horrible all around, but I do like these nails you've put together. Theyre super pretty and I would do what Jenna said and pour this into a new bottle. It's so pretty I'd cry if you barely bumped it and it broke!!

  11. Ugh, sorry to hear about the PCOS. My mom struggled with endimetriosis for a long time…not getting diagnosed properly, not getting surgery until it was really bad, having to get surgery again, etc., so I am scared of those types of disorders.

In positive news, Charla is PHENOMENAL, and hey, it didn't break!!! I thought for sure it did when I read that on Twitter!
