Essie Summer Neons 2013

So my life is really sucking big time lately, and it’s all due to my crappier than crap job. Have you ever had a job that literally sucks the life out of you? That’s what I’m going through right now and it seems that it just keeps getting worse and worse. I’m doing everything that I can to really continue to motivate myself so I can keep looking for something else, but even that is hard right now. It’s basically a vicious cycle where I hate my job and get really depressed and then can’t muster the motivation to look for something else. I have been sending out resumes, but I think I need to be a little more aggressive with my efforts. I just wish the job market and the economy wasn’t so bad so that there were some decent opportunities out there. Ugh…I hate that I keep talking about all my job issues because I’m sure you’re all tired of hearing about it so I hope that the next time I write about work, it will be to say that I’ve quit because I found something way better. Dare to dream, Cynthia…dare to dream. So what did I do today after a particularly horrible day? I came home to play with pretty polish. Since I was in a dark mood, I ended up finishing up my swatches for another neon offering: Essie Summer Neons 2013.  Are you ready for these pretties?

The sheerest of them all is Shake Your $$ Maker. I was so excited about this color just because I love this kind of green polishes, but boy is it sheer. I applied 5 coats here–some of them thick–and you could still see VNL. Visible nail line doesn’t bother me as much as it used to, but that is a whole lotta polish on your nails and as Sweet Brown would say: Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!4

This polish definitely gets the Cynthia seal of approval. As you already know, I love hot pink polishes so Bottle Service is right up my alley. I think this polishes was the most pigmented of them all: it looked pretty good after two coats but I applied 3 just to make sure I couldn’t see any VNL. If I had to pick a favorite from this collection, it would be Bottle Service.

You know I love me some orange polish as well, so I really liked the finished mani here. Of course this one was pretty sheer but definitely not as sheer as some of the other polishes in this collection. Saturday Disco Fever makes me think of a beautiful radioactive sunset that we see here in So Cal on particularly bad smoggy days. haha!

DJ Play That Song is another rather pigmented color. Despite me being a magenta/purple lover, this one wasn’t as interesting to me. Yes, it’s a beautiful color but I wasn’t totally in love with the color. It did however make me think of one of my favorite childhood shows: The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air.

I couldn’t find a clip of Ashley singing “Hey Mr. DJ” but this clip is from the same episode and I was snorting water out my nose when I saw Will and Carlton as back up dancers. hahahaha! Is it weird that I can still sing the whole theme song from The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air?

Boom Boom Boom  is pink. Very pink. It’s a girlie neon baby pink if that makes sense. I really like this color, but I would much prefer it with a pigmented creme formula like Dior Rosy Bow which this kind of reminds me of. If you’re looking for a bright jelly pink, look no further.

Call me crazy, but I think that I may have finally had my fill of these blue polishes. Doesn’t it seem like every single new collection seems to have a version of this color lately?? Bouncer It’s Me takes the prize for the second most sheer polish from this collection. I had to apply 4 thick coats of polish here and you can still see VNL. This really is a beautiful and vibrant blue so I don’t blame you if  you love it.

Before I forget, I do want to mention that these polishes are all jellies that dry to a satiny finish so I top coated them all with Seche Vite for an extra squishy look.  Also remember that Essie recommends that you use Blanc as a base coat (or any other smooth white polish) which will make these colors pop and will also decrease the number of coats that you will need to get even color development.  So my final thoughts is that this collections is really fun and bright–not necessarily NEON but bright. If you’re a jelly polish lover, than you will definitely like these. As for me, I am not really a jelly polish lover…give me creme polishes and I’m all over them. I do have a special fondness for crelly polishes because they are the best of both worlds. Anyway, as you can guess these are going on the blog sale so check them out before they’re gone.

Thanks so much for stopping by despite my Debbie Downer posts–I promise I’ll work on not being such a complainer because ultimately, that doesn’t get me anywhere. I must charge forward and continue on my job search before I go completely nuts. I’ll talk to you later!

    1. They are pretty for sure but uuufff…trying to get them to look good is a pain. But hey, sometimes we have to suffer for our nails to look cute, right? 😉

  2. Hilarious……..ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat! Too much! Anyway I love the sheer green! Beauty in a bottle

    1. I’m sorry to hear you’re going through the same crap. It’s so disheartening but at least we have all these pretty polishes to keep us entertained. 🙂

  3. Im so glad you did swatches of these… I’ve almost bought Shake your $$ maker a couple times now and I dont know whats been holding me back… now i do, it must be nail polish spidey senses!

    1. LOL…yes, my polish Spidey sense goes haywire sometimes yet I still manage to ignore it because my brain overrides it with: “MUST BUY ALL THE POLISH!!!”

  4. Colors are nice and shiny but I ‘m trying to figure out why your cuticles seems to be white in most of the pics

    1. Oh, I figured out what you mean. It’s actually my lighting and how it reflects on my cuticle area. Since I moisturize so much when I’m swatching, it’s like the light is bouncing off all the cuticle oil and stuff on that area.

  5. Don’t worry about complaining.. You gotta vent somewhere! 🙂 I almost picked up that green yesterday at rite aid and now I’m glad I didn’t. 5 coats??? For a green? Heck to the no. That’s ridiculous. None of these are very neon in my opinion, the sheerness would drive me nuts and yeah… these are just ok for me. I get kinda tired of having to wear some undie polish under these sheer polishes. And these aren’t even NEON!!!! enough to even go to the extra effort. Colors like this should be opaque. Too bad I’m not the boss, huh? ;p

    1. Hahaha…gotta vent somewhere. My blog and all of you get email blasted with my drama. lol

And yes, I agree…these are bright but not really neon. Whats with all the neon disappointment this summer??? If you had gotten the green one, you would have been pissed…I can see you throwing the bottle away. hahaha

    1. No, I didn’t use white underneath. I think it’s a lot of work to apply a white and then the polish so I like to show them how they really are. I bet they would look a lot better with white underneath.

    1. I think that Bright Night is not as dark as Bouncer It’s Me and BN isn’t a jelly–it has a much better formula and it’s very pigmented.

  6. Thank you for your swatches! I was surprised to see that “Shake your Money $$” left a VNL after five coats. However, the color still looks great on you! 🙂 Hang in there! Better days are ahead!

    1. Thank you, Grace! Sometimes it’s hard to really have perspective, but I know I just have to keep looking. 🙂

And yes, I was surprised too…5 coats is a lot of polish but I guess that’s just the nature of a jelly. Too bad that the color is so great…I would have loved a more opaque version.

    1. Yeah, just you wait….lol I honestly don’t think I’ve gotten my neon fix this year. These are bright but they’re not neons like Flip Flop Fantasy! The CG “neons” were kind of a big disappointment so who knows if anyone else is going to come out with some super summer collections. I’m actually waiting to see what LCN and Jessica put out for the summer.

  7. I don’t have quite the same ass-hattery going on as you where I work, but there are definitely shenanigans, so I completely understand your feelings.
I was most interested in the green and purple, but I like Bottle Service and Saturday Disco Fever the most on you.
As for the collection overall…meh. Too jelly, too sheer, and not enough screaming neon.

    1. I think that overall, this is the consensus on this collection. I think they are pretty but yeah…more NEONS! After the bitter disappointment with the CG Neons, I need some neon redemption in my life.

  8. I am sorry your life is crappy lately. And yes I have had that job that sucks the life out of you, it’s where I am now, it’s wonderful :/ I am literally in love with all of the polishes you have been posting lately, my wishlist is growing by the minute as I comment and like bomb everyone today. LoL btw my life sucks lately too, I don’t see Cynthia visiting my blog I get sad. lol 🙁

    1. I am being such a turd with commenting…I need to get a better schedule going. I tell myself that I will swatch every other day and on the non-swatch days I will comment on other blogs. You know what ends up happening? I buy more polish and then I can’t stop wanting to use them so I play with polish every day. It’s such a horrible cycle but now I am really going to have to work on it because I have to start taking the new job hunt more seriously so I’m probably going to cut down on posting again…maybe 3 times a week and I will have more time for work stuff and reading/commenting on other blogs.

  9. Girl, put some white polish under those jelly polishes…especially when they are neon. It not only takes away the VNL but it makes the colors really soar. I can’t remember which color you said you didn’t care for but if you had white panties on under it I bet you would change your mind. =)

    1. I don’t care much for wearing white under polishes. That’s too much babying for my liking, and I just can’t stand seeing some white peek out from the edge of the polish. I guess that’s the main reason I don’t go gaga over jelly polishes.
