Weekend Stuff

I finally got around to watching the two Redbox movies I checked out on Thursday. Yeah, I now…I’m dumb. I got The Skin I Live In and In The Land Of Blood In Honey. It is very rare that I don’t go see an Almodovar movie as soon as it comes out in theater, but I totally forgot about The Skin I Live In. If you aren’t much into indie and foreign cinema, you may not have seen many of Almodovar’s movies. He is one of the BEST directors in Spain and his movies are always twisted and absolutely magnificent.

Quick synopsis:

Robert is a surgeon who has created a new type of skin that he hopes will help burn victims. It’s burn resistant and repels insects. It is revealed that Robert keeps a beautiful young woman locked up in his house to whom he has given this new skin. We later learn that his wife was cheating on him and she was horribly burned in a fiery car crash. He nursed her back to health, but she committed suicide by throwing herself out a window when she saw her reflection in the glass. She landed right in front of her young daughter who was consequently hospitalized over the trauma.

Robert’s daughter, Norma, was allowed to leave the hospital to go to a wedding with her father. At the wedding, she is assaulted by a young man who is high on drugs. She is a very innocent sheltered girl who doesn’t really understand what his happening. When she starts to resist and scream, the young man, Vicente slaps her and knocks her out and he flees. Robert then finds Norma unconscious on the floor and tries to wake her up. When she wakes up and sees her father, she associates her rapist with him so she goes nuts again and has to be institutionalized again. Ultimately, she jumps out the window to her death just like her mother.

Robert then stalks and kidnaps Vicente keeping him chained up in some sort of basement. He then proceeds to give him a vaginoplasty–basically sexual reassignment surgery. He continues to transform him into a woman by using the new skin he invented and starts calling her Vera. The more work he does on Vera, the more she starts to look like his deceased wife. At the end, he takes Vera as his lover and she begins to reciprocate his affections. Vera lulls him into a false sense of security and then kills him and his housekeeper. Vera flees and goes back to his mother and reveals that he is Vicente.

If you think that’s weird, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If you’re interested in watching any other of his movies, I would recommend:

1) All About My Mother

2) Talk To Her

3) Bad Education

4) Live Flesh

There are a lot of others but this is a good place to start.

Moving on from freaky movies, I went to America’s Family Pet Expo at the Orange County Fairgrounds today. It was AWESOME! I saw so many cool animals of all kinds. I was in puppy heaven! I got to pet a million dogs and I spent some time at the Wheaten Terrier booth which is the kind of dog I’m dying to get. Here’s a picture of Oliver.

Look at that face!!!! He was the sweetest dog and he let me pet him for ages. His owner seemed a little cranky so I didn’t ask him as much as I wanted. I came back later and there were a few other ladies there who were amazingly sweet and gave me tons of info and advice. I want my wheaten already!!!!!!!

I also saw the freaking cutest beagles ever. I love how the youngest puppy was going apeshit.

There were a lot of agility competitions as well, and I loved seeing the crazy jumping water dogs. It was awesome to see how far some of them could jump.

So now I’m even more obsessed with getting a dog!

I hope you all had a nice weekend as well. 🙂

Whoa, talk about a movie mind fuck! lol That sounds like a flick I would probably have picked out to watch.

When I was in hs I worked at a blockbuster and foreign films were always coming home with me.

I definitely recommend it…I mean, now that I've spoiled it. hahaha There are a few movie theaters in my area that are dedicated to showing foreign and indie films so I always go watch them there. If I had worked at a movie rental place when I was in HS, I would have watched every movie known to mankind.

Awwwww that dog you were petting is so cute!!! His owner's a dick… they should have let you ask all the questions you wanted. Why else are they at the fair?! Anyway, it's still cool you got to be around all the dogs and stuff…. they're so cute! Have you thought about dog names for when you get one? I like Oliver's name. I was gonna name my dog Olive actually (not Oliver, just Olive, it's not a typo, haha) but then I saw a dog just like the one I got named Minnie way before I got the MY Minnie and for whatever reason just loved that name for her.

My big dog is named BubbaCharles which is a kinda funny story cuz one day long before we had a dog I was cleaning house and this pitbull came right up to my door and sat in my doorway alll day long just watching me vacuum, etc. He never left even though I only petted him a teeny bit. When my husband got home he tried to find the dog's owner, but couldn't so we decided we'd just let him hang out at our house till he either went home or his owner came around. While he was sitting outside our house (it was only a day, don't worry I didn't leave it homeless and outside for a week or anything) I started calling him Bubba and my husband was like "no he looks like a Charles" so we called him BubbaCharles. He ended up trotting back to his own house and then when we got our first dog- poof! BubbaCharles was the name we picked. 🙂

That is the cutest story about the name BubbaCharles. I want my dog so bad but I have to be patient. First step is getting the docs from my psych. My next appointment is in May so maybe this will be the time! As far as names go, I already have a name picked out: J. Alfred Prufrock. Yeah, I know…what a name. lol I will call him Alfie for short.

So true about the grumpy guy at the fair. He just wasn't welcoming…maybe he just didn't know his stuff cause I was asking him about the differences between the american and irish coats and he gave me a weak answer. The other ladies I met afterwards made up for him, though because they were sooooooo sweet. Their dogs were also cute but Oliver was cuter. 🙂

Ahh I LOVE THAT NAME! That's really cute. I like funny/clever dog names. Hopefully in May you'll get the OK for the dog or at least be thismuch closer to getting it 🙂 That's good the other ladies were more helpful.. maybe the guy wasn't a total dick and just less informed.. ok ok I'll be nice. haha.

Whoa, that movie sounds intense O.o
And Oliver is soooooo cuuuuuuute. Omg. Every time we see a wheaten, my husband and I accost the owner and beg to pet it. We've realized ours was a runt, because every other wheaten we've seen has been about double the size of our Maizy haha. But I love their little faces! We used to shave Maizy in the summer and leave her beard. She looked so cute 😀 I hope you do get a wheaten. They are the happiest, sweetest, smart dogs!

How long did you have Maizy? The wheaten is the only breed I want. They are just so cute and bouncy. I am so jealous every time I see people with their dogs. I haven't seen that many wheatens around so maybe they're not a very popular breed but I adore them. Actually, I am becoming such a dog person it's unreal.

We had her for about 3 years. She got really sick from eating something, I can't remember what exactlyand it made her colon twist up and swell badly, and surgery was out of the question, so we had to put her down
:'( Wheatens have extremely sensitive gastrointestinal systems, so make sure you do your research on dog food.
