China Glaze On The Horizon Collection

Those of you who know me, probably know how much I hate birds. This isn’t just like a dislike of birds, I actually find them disgusting and terrifying. Every time that I think of birds, I imagine feeling their weird scaly feet on my hand I nearly convulse. Napoleon Dynamite is one of my favorite movies, and this scene still cracks me up and horrifies me at the same time.

I freaking hate chickens too. So much so that I didn’t eat chicken for years. I really don’t know where my hatred for birds started, but I always remember going to visit my grandparents in Mexico when I was a kid. They had a lot of animals and they had this crazy rooster that would always poke at my legs with its beak and rip my tights. My mom always dressed me in frilly dresses and tights, and I ripped holes into every single pair. No one believed me that the rooster would chase me and poke holes in my tights so maybe that’s where it all started because I always got in trouble over that. I was about 4 years old when I encountered that psychotic rooster so my hate goes deep.

Well, imagine my horror when all these feather-type polishes started popping up. I first heard about them from Nails Inc. and I actually passed on them because they had a picture of a bird on the cap. I was slightly relieved when Sally Hansen put them out as “Fuzzy Coats,” but I still ended up passing on them. Well, last week I caved when I saw them at a local beauty supply. Despite the very avian names of these polishes, I decided to suck it up and swatch them for the benefit of you, my readers, and my own curiosity. I layered all of these polishes over a colored base because I did not want to fuss with the application of wearing them alone. I am going to show you my swatches first and will then talk about the actual polishes because the formula on them was identical across the board.

I didn’t really have any issues with the formula on these polishes. I started out applying two thin coats of the glitter to try to build it up. However, I found that applying one thick coat by loading up my brush with glitter and then pushing it around on my nails gave me the best result. I wasn’t going for a completely opaque glitter coverage, so this method worked for me just fine. I noticed that I was getting glitter basically sticking over my nail edge so I just had to push it back or smooth it back with the brush. I think these polishes dry a little dull since they are full of matte bar glitters and your nails will feel a little rough unless you put on a nice heavy coat of top coat. Someone who shall remain nameless mentioned that these polishes reminded her of armpit hair shavings. LOL Omg…I am still not over that comment and wish I had come up with it myself.Β  Overall, I think these are fun but they are not for me. First of all, the whole bird thing…

Secondly, I just think they look a little weird. I can see this trend going the way of the crackle except that crackle never made me want to vomit so there you go.Β  While I can see the allure of these and can understand why they’ve been so popular, I think this will be my first and last experiment with feather/fuzzy polishes.

So what about you? What do you think of this collection or trend in general? Are you going to be getting any of these? What are some of your phobias? Thanks so much for stopping in today, and I will talk to you soon!

  1. I’m not the only one with bird-phobia, hallelujah! I like most birds from afar but up close I find them horrifying. The claws..the beaks…no thank you. I think, like you, it started with chickens. I went to a friends farm when I was little and had on sparkly sneakers; the chickens cornered me and swarmed, pecking at my feet and ankles and it was terrifying. *Shiver*
These look nice enough, but I’ve just never really gotten into the whole feathered/fuzzy coat thing. Just not my jam, I suppose. Again, nice to know I’m not the only one πŸ™‚

    1. Judging from the comments on this collection, I know we are not alone. lol These bar glitters seemed like a good idea but they are just…not. I don’t like how these look or feel and it’s even worse that the whole collection is bird themed.

  2. Ugh, I wish they would do like, a glass fleck/shimmer collection (like China Glaze Ruby Pumps or Rapture, just in ALL the colors!) instead of all of these weird textures. Something that goes on smooth, and comes off smooth. I can’t stand for my nails to feel bumpy/rough on top, and polishes like this are a bitch to get off. I do like the look of some of these, but I can’t see them being worth the hassle.

    1. Strangely enough, these weren’t hard to remove but the texture feels weird. I am definitely OVER these bar glitter polishes. The trend needs to go away.

  3. Hilarious! The movie the Birds is a real creeper for me. I’m sorry about that rooster bully but everyone seriously has childhood traumas! Mine was a cujo like dog that use to stalk me everyday walking to school. I hated dogs up until my hubby (in his ever so psychological voice) said I WANT A DOG and forced dogs into my life because he had dogs ALL his life! Now I’m okay with them.

Anyway, flock together is the only polish I like out of the group.

    1. Omg…cujo. That’s like my dad’s favorite movie right now. lol You’re right that we all have those childhood traumas but I will never ever stop hating birds. lol

    1. LOL@rats with wings. So true and so gross. I do agree with you that this trend needs to go away yesterday. I don’t want anymore hairy polishes.

  4. i think this is the first time in my life i don’t like a whole set of polishes.. sometimes i like just one, but i like something.. all these polishes are all like..

(i just did this meme for this comment)

now, regarding fear of birds, sista i feel you.. i don’t like birds at all.. i hate THEM so effin much. i mean, they’re beautiful and everything, but FAR FAR effin FAR away from me (as you see.. birds freak the hello out of me).. i have TWO stories.. because i know you love a good laugh.

    so story #1:
i was living abroad, in italy.. and they have this smokers section on restaurants. in winter they make like these glass cages, with heat and everything.. so we were eating in this section and because i was the one who spoke the best italian of the gang they asked me to go and pay the bill.. so when i was coming back to the cage to pick my books from school (italian school) this pigeon attacked me out of nowhere.. the stupid bird followed me into the cage and started to poke my hair and head (so imagine it) and i freaked out, because before that birds didn’t freak me out, i just saved my distance, because i didn’t trusted them… and the worst was that the waiters, my friends and all the strangers.. they were just laughing.. and i was yelling in spanish swearing in panamanian spanish.. dude it was the worst i was crying inside. after that i just hate this nasty rats with wings..

    story #2:
so this is the worst story.. this is why i stopped trusting birds.
my mom had 2 small parrots (pericos norteΓ±os).. and they were evil, i still don;t understand how my mum couldn’t see it. they were plain angry little bastards.
we have this house in the mountains, and my mom always took the little bastards with her.. they have a big cage in our house in the city and a smaller one in the mountain.. and small one for the trips in the car.
so when we got there the birds were annoyed of being in the small one and my mom asked me to put the bastards in the cage.
i was all like NOT. let me create another meme for this:
    http://cdn.memegenerator.co/instances/600x/40165956.jpg

so.. in the end, you know you how latin parents are.. so i ended up doing what my mom “kindly” asked.
i opened the cage, took the first bastard in my hand and the thing BITED me.. and he didn’t let my finger go.. so i put inside the cage while screaming and crying and with my mom yelling from the kitchen: i will KICK your ass if you let my bird out or escape.. (non stop)
the little mofo didn’t let go so he was hanging from a small piece of my finger biting me with anger.. little bastardd! so i started shaking my hand (and he started to lose feathers, oh but the little mofo didn’t care) and he kept biting me with the beak that can open a nut.. so my mum came running after she saw i was hitting the little bastard head with a small stick, i wasnt hurting him.. i just wanted him to start biting the stick instead of my finger.. and she open the beak and he let me go..
    i was bleeding a lot..
the worst part was that my mom took the bastard out from the cage and start hugging him!!

i never felt so abandoned in my life. i forgot to mention that the parrots’ names were: chucky and hannibal.

so yes, i don’t like birds. and now you know why.

    1. LOL!!!! I have been cracking up with these stories since you first posted this comment. I know that if I had been in your shoes, I would hate birds with a passion as well. I mean, I already hate them and think they are disgusting so this would just make me feel worse about them overall.

  5. I am terrified of birds! They are creepy and strange looking…and pet birds always tend to bite me! It SUCKS! I like looking at my my sisters birds because of their colors and V’s bird Radox is adorible….but those are the only exception! *chills*
Regarding the polish though, I really really like them! With a thick top coat though! I’m one of those weird people that dig bar glitters. I’ll probably end up getting All a Flutter and Flock Together.

    1. I really don’t like these but I know some people will. Ugh…I hate birds so much and they are definitely creepy and gross. They just gross me out to the point that I get major anxiety.

  6. I think these polishes are interesting, but I don’t love or hate them. I’ll pass on buying them myself. I cracked up at your “imagine my horror…” line haha! I’m not “afraid” of birds, but I recently started developing a bit of a complex about them b/c the birds in Vancouver (where I moved to in October) seem to be EVERYWHERE and the seagulls like to dive bomb people for food. I just imagine their beaks coming right at my eyeballs and it freaks me out a bit. Ah!

    1. Omg, you just made me get anxiety just imagining crazy seagulls attacking me for food. I’d probably start crying. LOL I think everyone is just so meh about this collection and I don’t blame them cause I am totally not feeling it either.

  7. I despise bar glitter in all ways. It looks like little spider-leg hairs and is only slightly worse than flocked nails–which I imagine is how tarantulas feel. AGH.
It’s rare that I judge other people’s polish, because hey it’s a free country and I don’t care what you do, but this stuff just creeps me out. Basically I’m campaigning for all the bar glitter being buried in a desert.
And, like previous comments–glass flecks, yes! mainstream brands stopping their horrible imitation of indies, yes please!

    1. I basically feel this way about crackle except that crackle didn’t freak me out like these bird polishes. I am going to say that I am done with this trend and hope it goes away soon because I’m already sick of it. Ahh…glass flecks is one finish I am on the fence about. I like cremes the best and I like interesting shimmers that don’t look frosty. I am definitely getting picky!

  8. If nothing else, look at all the interesting comments that this collection brought to the table! Ornithophobia, hairy armpit shavings, hairy ball sacks, spider legs, etc.
I’m not scared of birds, I guess, but I don’t really care for them. I had a friend when I was young that had one and they’d always put towels over the cage to try and make it shut up. My first boyfriend had one and it was a total psycho…it would lay eggs and then get all bitey and bitchy when they tried to take them away. It was ironically named Angel…they should all be named after horror movie characters like Maria’s mother’s birds, hahaha. Plus, they’re really messy, and that’s kind of gross.
“I don’t have problems with birds, but I really have a problem with this collection.” Slow clap for Iriel. Well done, well done.
To be more succinct, I don’t like how these look. The end. Hahaha. I dunno…when we saw them in person, they just had zero appeal to me.
And in terms of phobias, I am scared of bees because I’ve never been stung and my mom is crazy allergic, so I am scared that I will be, too.
